Uncover the Untold
Since Reconstruction, Black writing in the United States has often been marginalized, labeled as obscene, seditious, or even dangerous. Between 2021 and 2022 alone, more than 1,600 books were banned in 138 school districts across 32 states. A majority of these banned titles were authored by Black, POC, and LGBTQIA writers—voices essential to understanding our collective history and culture.
This Black History Month, join @NBAF (National Black Arts) in reclaiming these narratives at the Blacklisted! Banned Books Fair. Taking place on February 24th & 25th in Atlanta, Georgia, this dynamic event celebrates African American authors who courageously create work that speaks truth to power.
What to Expect at Blacklisted!
The Blacklisted! Banned Books Fair is a powerful two-day event designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate the contributions of Black authors whose works challenge systemic oppression and censorship. Here’s what attendees can look forward to:
- Moderated Panel Discussions: Engage with leading Black authors, intellectuals, and activists as they discuss the importance of banned literature, freedom of expression, and the enduring impact of their work.
- Indie Black Book Vendor Market: Explore a vibrant marketplace featuring African American booksellers and authors, offering everything from classic titles to contemporary works.
- Youth Book Fair: Bring the kids for interactive children’s activities that celebrate Black literature, storytelling, and creativity.
- Photo Booths & Food Vendors: Capture memories with themed photo opportunities and enjoy delicious offerings from local food vendors.
Why This Event Matters
Book bans erase voices, stories, and perspectives that demand to be heard. By celebrating the works of Black authors and highlighting the stories that have faced censorship, Blacklisted! brings attention to the vital role literature plays in shaping understanding, challenging injustice, and celebrating cultural identity. The event is not just a book fair—it’s an act of resistance, education, and unity.
A Community Celebration
This free and open-to-the-public fair welcomes all who are passionate about learning, connecting, and celebrating the power of diverse literature. From one-of-a-kind books and intellectual discussions to family-friendly activities, there’s something for everyone at Blacklisted! It’s also a chance to support Black authors and booksellers while fostering a deeper appreciation for the stories that have too often been silenced.
